A hit-and-run early Sunday morning in Downtown Peoria led to one man being injured and the Peoria Police Department arresting a 36-year-old man on DUI charges.

Police said that at 2:32 a.m., officers observed a car traveling at a high rate of speed at the intersection of Hamilton Boulevard and Northeast Perry Avenue. The speed was enough that officers initially decided not to pursue, but minutes later, they were called to the 100 block of Southwest Monroe Street after the speeding vehicle was involved in a hit and run.

Upon arrival, officers found an injured man in the roadway. He was transported to a local hospital, where he is in serious but stable condition, according to a news release.

A license plate reader located the vehicle in the 3100 block of West Manchester Avenue in the Four Seasons mobile home park. Officers found the vehicle and arrested the driver, Derek M. Dawson, on charges of driving under the influence, failure to report an accident and render aid, operating an uninsured vehicle, driving on a suspended license, illegal transportation of alcohol and leaving the scene of an accident.

Dawson was taken to the Peoria County Jail and made a first court appearance Monday, where a judge granted him pre-trial release. He is next scheduled to appear in court Friday at 1:30 p.m.

PPD is continuing their investigation into the incident. Those with further information can contact police at (309) 673-4521 or provide an anonymous tip through their Tip411 service. They can also contact Crime Stoppers at (309) 673-9000.
